I went into one of these remodeled B&Ns for the first time yesterday after hearing about them for so long, (as far as I know, it's the only remodeled one in my whole city) and surprisingly didn't hate it. That being said, that's probably because I know I have the option to go to all the other cozier ones. Now if all B&Ns got remodeled like this I would be genuinely upset.

This would affect my agoraphobia. I hate open spaces!

This is insane. I moved from NJ 7 months ago, so this is completely different that what I saw when I was there. I remember when this B&N had two levels and an escalator.

I'm curious about a local B&N here in my city. It's been a while since I've walked through there. I was watching a video with someone explaining that each location now would be set up based on what customers were buying. I doubt any of these locations are different from each other. The problem is that everyone basically likes the same things now. You know, the whole social media popularity thing. Well, at least the company is still around and didn't go out of business.

I think it would help to add more comfortable seating and hang signs from the ceiling to break up the vastness of the ceiling.

I feel like their new design plan, resembles a large version of an airport gift shop’s wall of “books to buy before boarding”. 😔 I hope it’s a long time before the revamp comes to my B&N

I recently watched a book reviewer’s channel discussing the new B&N. What she described as being the revised look and atmosphere is 100% the opposite of what is depicted here. Immediately, I’m struck by what one sees walking in the door-a lot of crap that has nothing whatsoever to do with books. I can’t remember the YTuber who discussed the new CEO’s approach, but she specifically said that pushing things like wrapping paper and gifts and toys was not the new philosophy. This design is overwhelmingly uncomfortable and unapproachable and unappealing. It’s cold and off-putting. How do those wide spaces invoke the feel of a small independent book store? Ugh.

The warehouse look is not particularly good. It looks like a walmart. I thought that they wanted to avoid a corporate look?

Honestly it doesn't look any different then my BN store... maybe this is was only a issue in bigger states bigger cities. The seating area cafe looked so cold and generic like Sams. Thats depressing, the lightning also is way to bright

I read once that the old Paramus of B&N location had a section for used books. Does this one? The place looks very different from other B&Ns I've seen. Looks huge.

It is not very handicap friendly, or for people that may walk with a cane, it is to spread out. If I knew what department I was headed for it would be OK as long as there was a place to sit.

Wow that feels a lot like Chapters from Canada before it closed eventually. It was pleasant but when they added more seats they made less money and eventually they took seats away and that made people not happy who didn’t buy and so in time they lost a piece of audience of browsers and didn’t have enough buyers and so they had to eventually close some yrs later. It was an enjoyable store until they got greedy for sales and not enough seats and then eventually they closed which was too bad. It was enjoyable with the unique gifts they had too. Here the books seem a bit too less though. Still it is a fun place to visit but the big question will be does it truly make the sales this way or do people just want the experience? Wishing Barnes & Noble the best! It is like a maze .. it might work .. wishing them better luck than Chapters for them to stay afloat. This really feels sooo close to Chapters! A wonderful memory! Bookstores don't need to be behemoth. Here in Boston there are many good ones that don't need to be the size of Walmart to be successful.

There's one new one like that by me. There's no cafe and hardly any seats. I never go there.

I wonder if the stores are going to be different depending on the area, like the new CEO is intending it to be. My understanding is that the B&Ns in each area are going to be slightly different based on the area and what people in that are most into. His idea it to curate the stores so that it seems more like a neighborhood bookstore. The article I read that in stated that the CEO came from Waterstone in the UK and that's how they did things and it seemed to work. IDK how true that is, but that's something to consider before leaving negative reviews. Perhaps your local store will be a little different. I hope I see that in my area. The B&N is still the original version.

How ample is the parking compared to the old store? The old store had about a football field’s worth of space which was jam-packed during holiday shopping season.

I find it interesting how many people are commenting negatively on the new store. I know it is very different, but give it a chance. The new direction seems to be working, and that is a great thing. It's not like they can't continue to tweak presentation, layout and accommodations. I am actually interested in going to a store with a new layout and see for myself.

I know they're forced to compete in today's market against other booksellers and online retailers like Amazon, but this location just looks kind of depressing. It's like someone stuck a Barnes and Noble inside a former Whole Foods. I can't help but feel like they're changing the notion of their stores as a place for readers to settle down for an afternoon of peaceful browsing and are now encouraging shoppers to rush in, grab what they're looking for off the shelf, make a purchase and then leave to go read somewhere else. There's almost nothing inviting about this store, it just looks like someone set up a Scholastic Book Fair inside a warehouse. IMO that's not what the experience of buying from a physical book store should ever be about. I understand the financial pressures to compete with other book retailers, and normally I'd say any opportunity for the public to have greater access to reading is a great thing, but somehow they managed to take the one huge advantage a physical location has over buying online, which is the in-store "come-here-to-enjoy-yourself" experience, and it feels like they've reduced it to a grab-and-go checkout line.

Surprised by this. I thought the CEO's new model was to look like an indie store and not have a lot of non-book items for sale. The focus was supposed to be on books, not gifts.

This is probably a dumb idea, but I'd like to see a bookstore that not only sold second hand books (have a used book section), but also for the crafting/art section they could sell yarn or art supplies, for the music book section they could sell some music instruments but that might make the store too cluttered. xD

I agree that a bookstore really needs a lot of seats.

I honestly liked the older dark brown and green colors, but after 20 years of knowing the store... like a bedroom, you start to get tired of the same old interior design... it was time for a re-do.

My favorite book store is still Powells City of Books in Portland, but B&N is still nice
